How many conductors fit in a conduit?
Pick a conductor size and a raceway. The answer is the count printed in NEC Annex C, Table C.1 — a table we have checked cell by cell against the printed 2023 code book.

12 AWG THHN conductors fit in 3/4" EMT.
All conductors the same size. Annex C already applies the Chapter 9, Table 1 fill limits, so this count needs no separate percentage check.

The fill limits, and why the count already includes them
Chapter 9, Table 1 sets the maximum percentage of a raceway's interior that conductors may occupy: 53% for a single conductor, 31% for exactly two, and 40% for three or more. The two-conductor figure is lower than the three-conductor figure, which surprises people — it's about jamming, not about space.
Annex C tables are computed from those limits for the case where every conductor is the same size. So a count read out of Annex C is already compliant with Table 1, and working the percentage separately is a cross-check rather than a second requirement.
When Annex C does not apply
- Mixed conductor sizes. Annex C assumes they're all the same. Mix them and you work it by area from Chapter 9, Table 5 and Table 4.
- A nipple 24 inches or shorter. Chapter 9, Note 4 permits 60% fill in that case.
- Different insulation. XHHW and THHN have different areas. This table is THHN/THWN/THWN-2 only.
- Derating. Fill is a physical limit. More than three current-carrying conductors in a raceway is an ampacity question and it is a separate calculation.
The mistake worth knowing
A common one: reading the 40% column of Chapter 9, Table 4 as though it were
the conduit's total area. For 1/2" EMT the total interior is
0.304 in² and the 40% figure is 0.122 in². Divide
your conductor area by the 40% figure instead of the total and every
answer comes out roughly two and a half times too high — which reads as a
failure on a run that's comfortably fine.
